On Wednesday 15 January, we reviewed the results of our second photographic Challenge of the 2024-25 season.

Challenge 2 was again set by our esteemed Programme Secretaries and was to “design a record cover”.

The brief suggested that we had been approached by a band who needed a photograph for their new album cover.  They wanted it to represent one of their songs called “Man of Colours”.

We were provided with the full lyrics of the song and our images were required to be in square format and to represent a word, phrase or line of the song.

The whole purpose of our challenges is of course to get us creating new pictures, not merely plucking images from our back catalogues.  The subject for this challenge was announced on 13 December and the deadline for submitting our two images was 10 January.  Bearing in mind the intervening Christmas and New Year festivities, this turned out to be a pretty tight deadline for us to take, select and process our images, and get them in.

28 projected images were submitted.  They demonstrated a great variety of creative approaches – although, perhaps not surprisingly, a significant number of them focused on the song title itself.

There was no “critique” as such and members were invited to mark each image on a scale from 1 to 5.  So, after a quick “run through” of the images to gauge the overall standard, we got on with the marking.

After the aggregation of the scoresheets, the top six images were as follows:

Special congratulations to David for his marvellous chart-topping image.

This unusual challenge proved to be creatively stimulating and produced some fascinating images.  I wonder what excitements the Programme Secretaries have in store for us in Challenge 3?!
