On Wednesday 19 February we hosted Harpenden PS, Hemel Hempstead PS, and Milton Keynes City PS on Zoom in Round 3 of the annual CACC (Chilterns Association of Camera Clubs) Rosebowl Competition.

(Under the Rosebowl rules, all rounds of the competition are now run online.)

The Rosebowl is the CACC’s premier inter-club competition.  It is a Projected Digital Images competition and consists of a series of three “rounds”, run from October to February, in which random groups of three or four clubs are matched against each other.

For each match, each club submits 15 images.  The images are marked out of 20 and, after all the images have been marked, points are allocated to each of the clubs according to their order by marks awarded – 5, 3, 2, and 1 points for 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th place respectively.

The twelve CACC clubs with the most points after all three rounds then contest the Rosebowl Final.

23 clubs are participating in the Rosebowl this season.  LBPC reached the Final last year, finishing ninth.

Our independent judge for this match was Jonathan Vaines LRPS CPAGB AFIAP, a member of the London Salon and a very experienced judge of club and inter-club competitions.

He is a member and past President of the Cambridge Camera Club and the judges Secretary for the East Anglian Federation, as well as an Educator for the Royal Photographic Society, and an online tutor (regularly teaching post-processing skills to folk in North America and other corners of the globe).

After Jonathan had carefully considered and marked all the images, the marks were aggregated and verified on the spreadsheets and the results were as follows

  • 1st – Milton Keynes City PS with 263 marks – 5 points
  • 2nd – Harpenden PS with 259 marks – 3 points
  • 3rd – Leighton Buzzard PC with 248 marks – 2 points
  • 4th – Hemel Hempstead PS with 246 marks – 1 point

The top scoring images were

  • “Tulip Section” by John Humphrey (Hemel Hempstead PS) – 20 marks
  • “Early Morning Colour on Lake Bled” by Ali Asplin (Harpenden PS) – 20 marks
  • “Flock” by Keith Millard (Milton Keynes City PS) – 20 marks plus a star
  • “Kingfisher and Prey” by Neil Schofield (Milton Keynes City PS) – 20 marks
  • “Trawler” by Keith Millard (Milton Keynes City PS) – 20 marks plus a star

The Final will take place live (ie, not run online) in Amersham at the CACC Rosebowl Day on Sunday 27 April 2025.
