Last Wednesday (15 November) we hosted Croxley CC and Harrow CC in the first of three matches at the group stage of the annual NW Fed Competition.

This is an inter-club competition between the twelve members of the Federation of NW London Photographic Societies.

The group stage of the competition sees clubs compete in four groups of three clubs.  There are three matches in each group with each club hosting one match.  The winners of each group go forward to the semi-finals.

For each match, each club submits 16 images – four prints and four projected images.  The images are marked out of 20 and the marks are aggregated over all three group matches to determine the winner of the group.

The competition has been running for over 25 years.  But this is the first time LBPC has been involved.  We are in Group A and this was the first match.

The judge for this “Match A1” event was Colin Mill of MK City Photographic Society, a “prolific photographer” primarily engaged in landscape photography but happy to have a go at almost everything.  He is also an experienced judge and a regular visitor to the Club.  He judged the final of the 2022-23 competition.

After Colin had carefully considered and marked all the prints and then all the projected images, the marks were tallied and the results at this stage were as follows

  • 1st – Croxley CC with 215 marks
    (prints 109, projected 106)

  • 2nd – Harrow CC with 212 marks
    (prints 110, projected 102)

  • 3rd – Leighton Buzzard PC with 209 marks
    (prints 104, projected 105)

The top scoring prints were

  • “Tin-Man Alley” by David Manning (Leighton Buzzard PC) – 20 marks plus a star
  • “Angelic” by Ian Bennell (Croxley CC) – 20 marks plus a star
  • “White Water” – by Judith Gimber (Harrow CC) – 20 marks

The top scoring projected images were

  • “Woodland Fungus” by Patrick Linford (Leighton Buzzard PC) – 20 marks plus a star
  • “Another Lonely Tree” by George Purchase (Croxley CC) – 20 marks
  • “Bodyscape” – by Ian Bennell (Croxley CC) – 20 marks plus a star

Match A1 was very close with just six points between the three clubs.  Match A2 will be hosted by Croxley CC on 30 November and Match A3 will be hosted by Harrow CC on 11 December.  There’s all to play for!
