  • Another Year!

Andy is a renowned natural history photographer who has photographed virtually every species of mammal, insect, and bird in the UK. Andy’s life-long interest in natural history eventually developed into a serious photographic passion.  Yet somehow he also finds time to run his own camera shop in Chiswick.  And he is a member of the XRR Photographic Society in Watford. Andy uses an Olympus mirrorless camera.  This has a “four/thirds” sensor with a 2x crop factor.  His 300mm macro lens is therefore equivalent to a 600mm lens on a full-frame camera.  And the camera has some [...]

  • NW Federation Competition 2023-24

This is an inter-club competition between the twelve members of the Federation of NW London Photographic Societies. The group stage of the competition sees clubs compete in four groups of three clubs.  There are three matches in each group with each club hosting one match.  The winners of each group go forward to the semi-finals. For each match, each club submits 16 images – four prints and four projected images.  The images are marked out of 20 and the marks are aggregated over all three group matches to determine the winner of the group. The competition has been running [...]

  • “How Did You Do That?”

So, on Wednesday 8 November, we had an evening of “How Did You Do That?” sessions from some of our members. Graham Meers presented “The Stag Leighton Buzzard – Then and Now”.  Having been inspired by some pictures he’d seen in Southport by local photographer Matt Dodd, he has been merging old and new images of Leighton Buzzard to produce new “merged” images.  He demonstrated how he had taken an old photo (copied from a book) of The Stag pub in Heath Road and merged it with a picture he had taken himself from about the [...]

This was further described in the Programme – “we are looking for images that depict ‘Peace’.  Examples could include symbols of peace, a sense of being at peace, a peaceful or tranquil scene, a march for peace”. The entries encompassed a broad array of subjects in a variety of styles and approaches, although churches, graves, and memorials predominated.  But there were also landscapes, seascapes, portraits, street/candid, travel, and wildlife, plus colour, black and white, and infrared. Our independent judge for the competition was Chris [...]

  • AI Photography

On Wednesday 25 October he unravelled some of the mysteries of AI in photography for his fellow members. AI is a complicated subject and Paul set out to explain to us what AI is as it relates to photography and what it means for camera clubs and their members.  So, rather than debating the ethics of AI, he described some of the relevant AI technology and explained in simple terms how it works. He also covered how it has been used in photography for many years, how it has developed recently, and how with suitable instructions [...]

  • Location Challenge

This was the first challenge of the season. The location was selected this time by Chris Warby – the winner of last season’s final challenge.  His chosen location was “Billington Road”, Leighton Buzzard. The brief and accompanying map clarified that this meant “from Grovebury Road to the Macdonald's roundabout” plus some adjoining areas.  “This includes Victorian houses, Pages Park (with the narrow-gauge railway, sports, gardens, etc), Pages Park industrial units, and modern houses”. Having spent years walking down Billington Road to take his grandchildren to school from Sandhills, Chris was sure it would provide plenty of scope [...]

Taking Images vs Making Images – Steve Brabner

Steve is a member of the Amersham Photographic Society. And he chairs a sub-group there (the Amersham Beyond Group) which concentrates exclusively on creative photography and photo-based art. Despite having been a photography enthusiast for over 40 years, Steve claims not to see anything interesting or take interesting photographs. He says he doesn’t do sunrise or sunset or wildlife. And, anyway, it’s all been done before. Accordingly, Steve prefers to “make” images and produce something unique. His talk is therefore about “creative photography” and took us through his experiences of making images.
